AFFIDAVIT: Massive fight at Highlands HS leads to charges for several students, staff member injured

Investigators said surveillance footage and cell phone videos captured parts of the incident.

SAN ANTONIO — Seven students are facing charges after a large fight at Highlands High School last month that left a staff member injured, according to an arrest affidavit.

The fight broke out around 1:30 p.m. on September 30 in the school’s courtyard, where investigators said an estimated 50 students gathered to watch as several classmates punched and kicked each other.

A San Antonio ISD police officer responding to reports of a large fight called for backup after seeing the size of the crowd, according to the affidavit. The officer and her partner tried to separate two students who were fighting, but the students refused to stop.

Nearby, records say the school’s principal and several teachers were attempting to break up another group of students fighting. The assistant principal, who also intervened, was injured during the altercation and later sought medical treatment for back and shoulder injuries. She later told police the pain worsened and required multiple follow-up visits.

In total, seven students face charges, including one student charged with a Class B misdemeanor for participating in what police called a riot.

Investigators said surveillance footage and cell phone videos captured parts of the incident.

San Antonio ISD officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
