The 50-year-old suspect was arrested Friday after police officials said a child told his parents about the alleged assault.
SAN ANTONIO — An arrest affidavit has revealed more information about a local pediatrician being accused of sexually assaulting a child.
Gabriel Perez, 50, was taken into custody Friday on a charge of aggravated sexual assault of a child. Officials said the victim, estimated to be between 10 and 16 years old, had made an outcry to his parents. They then contacted local authorities.
“Our detectives went and spoke with the suspect you guys saws today,” said Officer Lizzandra Trevino, an SAPD spokesperson. “He had corroborating statements that aligned with what the victim stated had occurred. At this time, our detectives had enough and sufficient evidence to walk a warrant on Mr. Perez.”
Trevino said the suspect was arrested at his place of residence “with no further issues,” and thanked detectives and the SAPD Street Crimes Unit for their handling of the case.
According to an arrest affidavit obtained by KENS 5, a 16-year-old boy was a patient of Perez’s. The boy made an outcry when he was 12 that Perez asked the boy’s mother to leave the exam room while Perez was doing a routine doctor’s exam on the boy.
Perez allegedly told the boy, “It’s okay, my family didn’t accept me for who I was either. If I was in high school, I would date you. Would you date me?” This made the boy uncomfortable, but he did not make an outcry to his parents.
The next year, the now-13-year-old boy returned for his annual check-up. Perez allegedly asked the mother to leave again.
This time Perez made an inappropriate comment about the boy’s genitalia then sexually assaulted the boy inside the exam room, including performing oral sex on the boy. The boy told police he was in shock at the time and didn’t say anything, according to the affidavit.
After the assault, the affidavit said Perez grabbed the boy by his shoulders and tongue-kissed his mouth and face. He then told the boy he “can’t tell anyone” before kissing him again and telling him to put his clothes back on, inviting the mother back in the room.
On Friday, Perez was interviewed by officials and said that the Texas Medical Board had received a formal complaint against him originating from an incident from Feb 2024 where he made an inappropriate comment about a 17-year-old boy during a genital inspection.
Perez also told officials he has hugged and kissed multiple patients when they feel “stressed.”
He said he only inspects the genitals of female patients with their parents in the room but only up to a certain age.
However, Perez said that he inspects the genitals of male patients without their parents or anyone else in the room. He said that only about 25% of the time during a genital inspection will he find it necessary to touch the patient’s genital.
Perez has denied the allegations made by the victim.
While officials didn’t share information about where Perez worked, Trevino said it’s possible there may be other victims connected to Perez. She urged the community to contact SAPD if they or someone they know may have been victimized.
Perez didn’t speak with news reporters as he was being taken to be booked into the Bexar County jail.
According to jail records he has posted his $150,000 bond and has gotten a court appointed attorney.
