AFFIDAVIT: Woman arrested in connection to fatal hit-and-run caught on camera in northwest SA

Theresa McCormick, 52, is accused of hitting and killing 75-year-old Cynthia Anthony outside a gas station near the Medical Center on Sunday.

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio police have arrested the driver accused in a fatal hit-and-run on the city’s northwest side.

According to an arrest affidavit, 52-year-old Theresa McCormick was operating a 2010 gray Nissan Murano when she entered the parking lot of a gas station on the 2300 block of Babcock Road shortly after midnight on Sunday.

Investigators said gas station surveillance video showed the driver run over the victim, now identified as 75-year-old Cynthia Lamar Anthony, who was walking toward the pumps. Records state McCormick, the sole occupant of the vehicle, got out and walked over to the victim before alerting a store clerk.

Witnesses who observed the crash from the McDonald’s next door told McCormick she had just ran the victim over, according to the arrest warrant. That’s when McCormick allegedly got back into her vehicle and fled the scene.

Police said witnesses followed and confronted the suspect, telling her to go back to the scene, to which she was recorded saying: “I did not see her. I thought it was a trashcan that I went over.” Those same witnesses obtained McCormick’s license plate, according the affidavit.

Investigators said McCormick never returned to the scene and failed to render aid to the victim who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Arrest records say police were able to track down the vehicle and got in contact with McCormick who claimed she did not remain on scene because she was on break and had to go back to work. Officials said McCormick also told investigators she tried to go back to the scene but when she did, “no one was there.”

McCormick’s coworker received text messages from her claiming it was an accident and that she believed she had run over an object, not a person—according to the arrest warrant.

Authorities said McCormick was positively identified by her coworker in a photo lineup and a warrant was issued for her arrest.

Police said she was taken into custody on Thursday and is now facing a charge for failure to stop and render aid resulting in death.
