There wasn’t a dry eye in the house when he left the Kerrville shelter.
KERRVILLE, Texas — UPDATE 6/5/25
Patience is rewarded! After waiting a few years at the Kerrville shelter, Scout finally has his forever home!
“There wasn’t a dry eye in the house when we saw how happy Scout was with his new parents,” said shelter staff. “Scout showed zero hesitation when he hopped right up into his Dad’s truck ~ eager to get to his new house! Scout was all smiles telling everyone goodbye and gave us all big hugs. Even though we shed some tears seeing him leave, we know he’s going to have the BEST life with his new family. Happy trails sweet Scout!”
And this is why we continue to highlight these long stay dogs. We don’t give up on them because we know it just takes that one person who sees the story and rushes to the shelter to give every story a happy ending.

Our “Forgotten Friends” series showcases a dog or cat each week that has spent a lengthy time at an area shelter, just waiting for someone to notice them and bring them home to love.
This week’s Forgotten Friend is Scout, a 5-year-old Boxer mix who was brought to the Kathleen Cailloux Humane Society in Kerrville three years ago in July of 2022. He was surrendered by an elderly couple who decided they were too old to continue to take care of him.
“Scout initially came in to the shelter from Kerr County Animal Services as a lost dog whose owner never showed up,” said shelter staff. “He was then adopted by an older couple and lived happily with them for a year. He didn’t do anything wrong but the couple decided they were getting too old to have a dog. It was absolutely heartbreaking to imagine how Scout felt being returned to the shelter after living in a home for a full year. Just when he got used to a warm house with a back yard he ended up right back where he started.”
Shelter staff said he was very depressed when he realized his family was not coming back for him.
Scout gets along great with other dogs, but shelter staff is not sure about cats.
He would do really well with an active family, and would probably enjoy having a family with kids to play with. His sweet and loving personality makes him a favorite of everyone at the shelter.
“He bounces around with all of the toys in the play yard and loves to crawl up in your lap and give you kisses'” said shelter staff.
He has a lot of energy and loves to go for walks and other adventures. He especially loves playing with other dogs in the yard.
“Scout has a very happy and loving personality,” said shelter staff. “He always appears to have a big smile on his face despite being let down by his family. He is always looking at every person who comes to visit and has a longing look on his face, which seems to be saying “are you my new person?”
He loves treats and getting petted.
He’s healthy, neutered, current on all of his vaccinations and just waiting for you to bring him home and love him.

“Since Scout was let down by his last owners, it’s really important that the next family or person who adopts him knows that this is a forever commitment,” said shelter staff. “It would be tragic for him to go through that heartbreak again.”
Who is ready to step up and give Scout a forever home?
If you are interested in adopting Scout and being his forever family you can visit the Kathleen Cailloux Humane Society in Kerrville at 2900 Junction Highway. The shelter is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. until Noon and again from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. The adoption fee for Scout is $75.
Applications can also be emailed to them at hsk@hctc.net. The shelter’s phone number is (830) 367-7722. Shelter staff says that it might be better to call or go in person because they check voicemail more frequently than emails.
For whoever adopts Scout, Lucy’s Doggy Daycare & Spa will be lending a paw by offering them a free “Glow Up” Day at the Spa, which includes a massage therapy bath and Pawdicure. One of Lucy’s most cherished core values is to continue Lucy’s legacy of giving back to pups in need, as Lucy herself was a rescue!
The shelter says they can always use volunteers at their resale shop, which helps to support the shelter. The resale shop is staffed entirely by volunteers. You can support them by donating gently used items, or by stopping by and purchasing stuff. The shop is affectionately known as the “pick of the litter resale shop.” The shop is open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. They are closed on Sundays and on major holidays. Call them at (830) 367-7755.
Monetary donations are always welcome, too. Send them to their post office box at P.O. Box 294810 Kerrville, Texas 78029.
They always need things to help with the care of the animals. Check out their current wish list below.

Remember when you adopt a shelter pet, you save two lives… the one you bring home with you and the one that now will be saved because the shelter has more room.
