After waiting more than two years, Munch has been adopted | Forgotten Friends

Staff said that little interest had been shown to the 3-year-old terrier mix, who kept waiting patiently for someone to stop at his kennel door and choose him.

BULVERDE, Texas — UPDATE 12/11/23

We always like starting out the week with an amazing update for one of our Forgotten Friends. After waiting more than two years for someone to notice him with zero interest, Munch has been adopted!

We published a story on November 30 that was shared more than 6,000 times on social media. Shelter staff told us that people from as far away as Australia reached out expressing their interest in adopting Munch. Then a reporter from Newsweek saw the story and published her own version. As a result of that story, someone in Louisiana reached out to BAHS and they are a perfect fit for Munch.

He will be taken to meet his new human on Saturday. We will update this story with pictures when we get them.

Good luck in your new home, Munch and MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Our “Forgotten Friends” series showcases a dog or cat each week that has spent a lengthy time at an area shelter, just waiting for someone to notice them and bring them home to love.

Munch is a three-year-old terrier mix who was found as a stray and brought to the shelter in September of 2021. Bulverde Area Humane Society determined that he was not chipped and had no human, so the shelter became his home. Munch is neutered, microchipped, heartworm and chagas negative, current on all of his vaccinations and on flea, tick, and heartworm prevention.

He has now spent more than 800 days at the shelter in his kennel, not knowing what a real home is. While the volunteers and staff give him plenty of love, it’s truly not the same as having your very own human to love and care for you.

“In the 800 days since he’s been with us, poor Munch has known nothing but the four walls of his kennel and the yards of our shelter,” said BAHS staff. “It breaks our hearts to see him patiently waiting at his kennel door, hoping that one day someone will walk by and choose him.”

Shelter staff believe that Munch would do best with an experienced dog owner who doesn’t have any small kids.

“I say that because he jumps,” said Penny, at BAHS. “He does great with older kids though.”

Munch has become a favorite of the volunteers who spend a lot of their time playing with him. He loves his toys and adores sniffing around on the ground exploring. One of his favorite things to do is play in the water when it’s warm outside.

“Munch is a smart boy who is very treat motivated, so we believe he will do great when it comes to training and learning how to act in a home setting,” said BAHS staff. “From what we have observed at the shelter, he is friendly towards people, but can be picky about the dogs he likes.”

He gets along pretty well with female dogs, but can get amped up pretty quickly, so shelter staff said his play should be supervised. When it comes to cats though, Munch says, “Just say no!”

If there are other dogs in your home, BAHS does require a meet and greet, which can be scheduled by emailing them at bahshelter@yahoo.com

“Munch can be super chill and watch Netflix with you, but can also have the zoomies and run around the yard,” said BAHS staff. The best way to to keep that zoomie energy at bay is to take him for long walks every day.

He loves to be petted and scratched behind his ears. Munch will also try to push boundaries with you if you don’t keep him in check. By that we mean, he will get a little “mouthy” and may try to jump on you if he thinks he can get away with it. That’s where being an experienced dog owner would come in handy.

Munch must be an indoor dog and all of the current pets in your home must be spay/neutered and up to date on vaccinations.

“He’s a goofball and we just love him to death,” said Penny. “If someone would give him a chance, he would do great in a home.”

Maybe you’re not quite ready to adopt but you’d like to give it a try. Did you know that you can foster Munch to give him a chance to experience life outside of the shelter, and BAHS will provide his food and take care of all medical needs.

This gets Munch out of the shelter and into a home, but you are not under any obligation to keep him forever. That is, until you decide that you are ready.

For whoever adopts Munch, Lucy’s Doggy Daycare & Spa will be lending a paw by offering them a free “Glow Up” Day at the Spa, which includes a massage therapy bath and Pawdicure. One of Lucy’s most cherished core values is to continue Lucy’s legacy of giving back to pups in need, as Lucy herself was a rescue!

If you are interested in adding Munch into your family, please email bahshelter@yahoo.com.

The fee to adopt Munch would be $100, which covers the cost of him being neutered, all vaccinations, flea preventative and more. The lower fee is because he has been at the shelter for more than a year.

The shelter is located at 3563 Kingsnake in Bulverde and they are open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

BAHS hosts a Reading to the Cats and Dogs event every month. The next one will be held on Monday, December 18. Grab your favorite book and come out to read to their animals.

All ages are welcome and the pets love it! There is no sign up necessary, all you need to do is arrive the day of the event with a book and closed toe shoes. After you get there, meet with them for a quick orientation before going off to read aloud to the dogs and cats. It’s a great chance for kids to brush up on their reading skills while making the animals feel loved. Everyone benefits. Also great for older folks as well. Connect with animals while keeping your brain active.

BAHS is currently experiencing an overabundance of kittens and cats, so are having a feline sale in th ehopes of finding homes for some of them.

All kittens up to five months old are $85, five months to one year are $55 and one year and older are just $25! Most of the cats and kittens are fully vetted and ready to go home the same day.

They have a complete list of items in which they are always in need of right here.
