SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Spurs announced that forward Harrison Barnes and his wife, Brittany Barnes, have donated $250,000 to the AlamoPROMISE tuition-free program. The program benefits students at St. Philip’s College, a Historically Black College and University and Hispanic-serving institution within the Alamo Colleges District.
According to the Spurs, the financial contribution was made to honor Black History Month, and aid in eliminating financial barriers, and expand educational opportunities for students pursuing their academic and career goals.
AlamoPROMISE offers graduating seniors in Bexar County the opportunity to pursue higher education without the financial burden. This “last-dollar” scholarship covers tuition and required fees after financial aid awards are applied for up to three years or until the completion of an associate degree or academic certificate, whichever comes first. Now in its fifth year, the program has enrolled over 23,000 students.
“Harrison and Brittany Barnes’ generous investment in AlamoPROMISE is not just a gift – it’s a catalyst for change,” said Dr. Mike Flores, Alamo College District Chancellor, in a release. “Their support will open doors for students at St. Philip’s College, ensuring that financial barriers do not stand in the way of educational and career success.”
“This remarkable gift from Harrison and Brittany Barnes will empower our students at St. Philip’s College to dream bigger, achieve more, and transform lives,” said Dr. Adena Williams Loston, St. Philip’s College President. “We know that education changes the trajectory of one’s lived experiences, fulfills aspirational goals, and ensures economic viability. We are immensely grateful for Harrison and Brittany’s generosity.”
The Barnes say they were drawn to give to AlamoPROMISE because they believe in the power of education and the importance of providing equitable opportunities for all students to achieve their goals.
“Throughout my career I’ve had the privilege of experiencing the power of community and support. Now, as part of the San Antonio community, we are honored to give back and help invest in the future of this incredible city. Partnering with AlamoPROMISE and St. Philip’s College is my way of ensuring that young people here have the resources and opportunities to succeed,” said Barnes in a release. “It’s about creating lasting change, building bridges, and supporting the next generation of leaders. My wife and I are both deeply committed to being advocates for this community, and together, we’re excited to make a meaningful impact and help open doors for local college students to chase their dreams.”
