Alleged package thief dies after threatening confrontation at southeast-side SA apartments

The 33-year-old man was pronounced dead at the hospital.

SAN ANTONIO — One person believed to have been stealing packages from a San Antonio apartment complex died after being confronted by management and tenants.

The shooting was reported just before 11 a.m. Wednesday at the complex off Goliad Road, near the intersection with Interstate 37 on the southeast side.

Witnesses say they saw a suspicious man, later identified as 33-year-old Anthony Ortiz, in the parking lot looking into cars, armed with a taser and a knife threatening neighbors at the apartment complex.

Later it was revealed that he was also seen grabbing packages from apartments’ front doors.

“I was walking out my dog,” one tenant said. “A lady stopped by with a truck and she yelled at me and said, ‘Get inside, there’s somebody dangerous around here.’”

At some point, apartment management and two maintenance workers confronted Ortiz, police say.

Officials say he attacked those workers, even punching one in the face and pushing him down to the ground. Ortiz then started threatening all the neighbors standing outside with a knife and with a taser, according to officers.

Apartment management once again told him to leave, and that’s when he took off running. Police say a neighbor at the complex chased after Ortiz, who then pointed a taser at the resident.

The resident responded by shooting Ortiz, hitting him in the stomach. He was taken to a hospital where he later died.

Police said they do expect the individual who shot Ortiz would face charges. No arrests have been made yet.
