Amazon rolling out same-day delivery of fresh food in more than 1,000 cities, including SA

SAN ANTONIO — Amazon hopes its new roll-out will streamline your online grocery shopping experience to get same-day delivery of fresh food to your door.

The online retail giant is targeting more than 1,000 cities in the effort, including San Antonio.

Perishable food items, including dairy, meat and seafood, can be checked-out in the same online cart alongside other items.

You’ll be able to combine fresh groceries with everyday Amazon purchases, ordering bananas alongside smartphone cases or milk along with school supplies, and it will all be delivered within hours.

“We’re continuously innovating to make grocery shopping simpler, faster, and more affordable for our customers, especially Prime members,” said Doug Herrington, CEO of Worldwide Amazon Stores. “By introducing fresh groceries into our Same-Day Delivery service, we’re creating a quick and easy experience for customers. They can order milk alongside electronics; oranges, apples, and potatoes with a mystery novel; and frozen pizza at the same time as tools for their next home improvement project—and check out with one cart and have everything delivered to their doorstep within hours.”

Previous partnerships with local grocery stores took customers to different checkouts.

Amazon said this new service will complement its existing grocery delivery offerings.

“After trying this service for occasional items, customers have discovered how much we’ve simplified online grocery shopping,” added Herrington. “For example, of course you can order cookware for Same-Day Delivery, but now you can add everything you need alongside it for grandma’s chicken soup recipe – all the fresh veggies, broth, noodles, herbs, chicken, and even bowls to serve it in. Just add what you need in one order, and we handle the rest. Customers are enjoying online grocery delivery so much we’re seeing them turn to Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods Market for even more of their grocery needs.”

That includes Amazon Fresh, which offers faster deliveries with a higher minimum payment, and Whole Foods Market.

Prime members receive free same-day delivery on orders over $25. For customers without a Prime membership, the service is available with a $12.99 fee, regardless of order size.

Amazon plans to expand the service to 2,300 cities by the end of the year.
