Lee Kiefer looked to defend her gold medal title against fellow American Lauren Scruggs.
PARIS, France — Lee Kiefer successfully defended her gold medal fencing title, defeating fellow American Lauren Scruggs in an exciting all-U.S. foil fencing final at the Paris Olympics.
Scruggs, a Harvard student, becomes the first Black fencer from the U.S. to win an individual medal in a women’s event. Scruggs won 15-9 against Eleanor Harvey of Canada in the first semifinal. Harvey ended up taking bronze.
Kiefer, who is currently a medical student, won gold at the Tokyo Olympics.
There had not been an all-U.S. final in an Olympic fencing event since 2008, when Mariel Zagunis beat Sada Jacobson in saber as part of an American podium sweep. Before that, the last time it happened was in 1904.
