Another death reported at Bexar County jail; second in as many days

Details are limited as of now.

SAN ANTONIO — A day after Bexar County officials started investigating the jail’s sixth inmate death of the year, a case authorities say could be homicide, that number appears to have grown again.

Emergency vehicles were seen outside the jail just west of downtown around 1 p.m. and San Antonio fire officials confirmed they responded for a cardiac arrest in progress. Authorities said the victim died at the scene, but their identity hasn’t been disclosed and it’s unknown if they were an inmate.

If it is an inmate who died, it would mark seven at the jail in 2024 after 12 inmates died while in Bexar County custody last year. Officials say 62-year-old Jose Barrera died there around 2 p.m. Tuesday; little information has been shared about the circumstances of his death, but the Texas Rangers are investigating.
