Another Loop 1604 flyover is set to open this weekend for SA drivers. How many are still under construction at the intersection?

Drivers, rejoice! It’ll soon be a bit easier to travel through Loop 1604 and Interstate 10 as the billion-dollar expansion project continues.

SAN ANTONIO — One of San Antonio’s busiest intersections continues opening up for business as the yearslong project to expand Loop 1604 from four lanes to 10 along a 23-mile stretch on the north side hits another checkpoint.

Officials with the Texas Department of Transportation say they plan to open a new flyover ramp at Loop 1604 and Interstate 10 – the fifth in the last 10 months – by 5 a.m. Monday, creating a smoother commute for drivers traveling from I-10 West to Loop 1604 East. It will be accessible on I-10 just past UTSA Boulevard.

It follows other flyovers opening up to commuters at the northwest-side intersection, including two others in the last two months. Another which opened in late August and connects Loop 1604 West and I-10 East rises 128 feet into the air, making it the tallest flyover in the Alamo City.

TxDOT is building eight total flyovers at Loop 1604 and I-10 as part of the $1.4 billion Loop 1604 North Expansion Project, and expects them to be completed by the end of next year.

The overall project started in 2021 and is comprised of six segments focusing on different stretches of Loop 1604. Five are currently in progress, with Segment 6 – stretching from Judson to I-35 – scheduled to start by the end of 2025. The TxDOT effort is adding HOV lanes to Loop 1604; creating more accessibility for bicyclists and pedestrians on highway frontage roads; adding direct connectors; and “replacing the signalized frontage road intersections with a continuous flow configuration.”
