Apartment fire on east-side injures firefighter, damages nearby units

Multiple crews were dispatched to the scene. Officials have not released information on injuries, evacuations or the cause of the fire.

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — A fire broke out at an east-side apartment complex Thursday morning, spreading smoke and water damage to nearby units and injuring a firefighter who was treated at the scene.

San Antonio Fire Department crews were dispatched around 11 a.m. to an apartment in the 17 block of Pecan Valley Circle, near Pecan Valley Drive. Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire on the second floor in the attic area of a vacant apartment, according to SAFD.

Crews launched an aggressive interior attack to bring the fire under control, said SAFD public information officer Joe Arrington.

Arrington said the fire started when maintenance workers experienced an electrical short while turning on a heater, causing a furnace to ignite.

Smoke and water damage were reported in surrounding units. One firefighter had embers fall inside his jacket and was treated by EMS at the scene. He was not transported to a hospital and is expected to be OK.

No other injuries were reported.
