APD investigating homicide near UT campus

The public has been asked to avoid the area.

AUSTIN, Texas — A person of interest has been detained after a homicide near the University of Texas campus on Saturday afternoon.

The incident happened at the intersection of the Interstate 35 service road southbound and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, according to the Austin Police Department.

APD said police received multiple 911 calls reporting a person had been shot just after 4 p.m.

Officers arrived on the scene around 4:09 p.m. and located a person “with obvious signs of trauma.”

Police, EMS and firefighters attempted life-saving measures, but the person, a Hispanic man, was pronounced dead on the scene.

The public has been asked to avoid the area.

This is being investigated as Austin’s seventh homicide of the year.
