Are Texans proud of their home state? A new poll reports surprising insights

It’s a truth universally accepted that Texans love Texas, but a new poll begs to differ.

TEXAS, USA — It’s a long-running cliche: Texans love Texas.

So much so that everyone knows if you meet a Texan outside of the Lone Star State, you’ll quickly know it. That’s because we have a reputation for bringing the conversation back to our home state at every opportunity.

The theme of Texas pride is also well-wrought in the annals of pop culture. Celebrities like Matthew McConaughey and Willie Nelson are known primarily as actors, singers, and Texans.

However, a recent survey is throwing a hitch in Texas’ state pride giddy-up.

YouGov, an international online research company, conducted a survey of more than 5,400 Americans to reveal who has the most state and national pride. The survey included more than 100 respondents from each state.

The survey found that Texas falls far short of the national average, with just 46% of Texans reporting that they are “very proud” or “somewhat proud” of their state. That places Texas among the bottom two states for state pride, according to this survey.

Only Missouri reported less state pride, with 30% of respondents saying they were “very proud” or “somewhat proud” of the Show Me state. Some Midwestern states fared better; Minnesota and Michigan led the pack with 79% of each state’s residents expressing pride, according to YouGov.

YouGov excluded 31 states from the ranking because they couldn’t meet the threshold of 100 minimum respondents, the survey company said.

Texans reported more national and local pride. About 64% of those surveyed expressed pride in their community, according to YouGov.
