Arya is an active, mixed breed dog with energy to burn | Forgotten Friends

She loves car rides, taking long walks, cuddling and has never met a food or treat that she didn’t like.

SAN ANTONIO — Our “Forgotten Friends” series showcases a dog or cat each week that has spent time at an area shelter, just waiting for someone to notice them and bring them home to love.

This week’s Forgotten Friend is an active, mixed breed dog named Arya, who is roughly one-and-a-half-years-old. Her DNA panel shows she is actually a mix of eight breeds, including American Staffordshire terrier, German Shepherd, Husky, Labrador retriever, American pit bull terrier, great Pyrenees, chow chow, and bulldog.

She has been waiting over one year for a home to call her very own. Arya is mostly black but has some white markings as well, on her face, chest and paws. She has one blue eye and one brown eye and likes to sleep with her tongue hanging out.

“In May of 2024, a friend reached out to me about four puppies that were on the euthanasia list at only eight-weeks-old and Arya was one of the puppies,” said Rachel of Rosco’s Rescue. “I’m not sure how she first ended up at that shelter, but we pulled her over to ours.”

Arya definitely would like to join an active family that includes at least one person who likes to run, hike or just takes frequent walks, that would take her with them.

“She loves running around the yard and also playing with her toys,” said Rachel. “But she also enjoys cuddling and attention.”

She gets along with other dogs but sometimes doesn’t realize just how big she is and might just be a little too enthusiastic for smaller dogs. Arya has never had any interaction with cats, so that’s an unknown factor.

“Arya is a very sweet girl with lots of love to give,” said Rachel. “She has lots of energy and makes a terrific jogging partner. In fact, she went to an event with the New Braunfels run club last week and got along with every runner, and every dog she met at the event.”

She is a very curious girl that is also super smart, which is probably from the mix of Husky and German Shepherd in her. She is potty-trained, crate-trained and already knows how to sit.

She does very well on car rides, and is even good at the vet’s office. This adorable girl loves attention too, wanting all of the pets and cuddles you are willing to give her. And so far, she has never met a food or treat that doesn’t like. Suffice it to say she’s not a picky eater.

“Arya is very strong and does well on the leash, but does pull when she gets excited,” said Rachel. “She wants to say hello to every single person she meets.”

For whoever adopts Arya, Lucy’s Doggy Daycare & Spa will be lending a paw by offering them a free “Glow Up” Day at the Spa, which includes a massage therapy bath and Paw-dicure. One of Lucy’s most cherished core values is to continue Lucy’s legacy of giving back to pups in need, as Lucy herself was a rescue!

Arya is healthy with no special needs other than her very own family! She has already been spayed and is current on her vaccinations.

Arya’s adoption fee is $150.00 and you can fill out an application at www.roscosrescue.com or send an email to roscosrescuetx@gmail.com. They will also be happy to answer any additional questions you might have about Arya.

You must schedule a “meet and greet” if you have another dog in your home, to make sure they will get along before you can finalize the adoption.

Rosco’s Rescue is located at Rachel’s house, so all of the dogs in their care are in foster homes while they wait to be adopted. But you can call them at (210) 601-9181. They are open Tuesday through Fridays from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. and on weekends from noon until 4 p.m. They are closed on Mondays. Please make sure you refer to these times when calling.

“Try before you buy”

Arya is also one of their dogs who is approved for “Doggy Day Out” and “Holiday Hounds,” which are both short-term fostering programs. Rosco’s Rescue will provide you with everything you need to take care of her for that time. This is a great way to see if Arya would be a good fit for you in your home.

  • Doggy day out is either for just one day or a whole weekend.
  • Holiday Hounds is a short-term foster program during the Christmas season.
