‘As long as they’ll have me, I’ll be here.’ 90-year-old substitute still in the classroom

A woman from Jersey Shore is proving you’re never too old to keep doing what you love.

JERSEY SHORE, Pa. — Nancy Yaudes took attendance during a German class at Jersey Shore Area High School on Friday. Yaudes is a substitute teacher and a familiar face around the school.

“Every time I see her, I know stuff is going to get done. There’s not going to be a racket in the back of the classroom,” said freshman Gage Watkins.

Earlier this month, Yaudes celebrated a milestone birthday. She turned 90, and she’s still teaching. She’s been part of the Jersey Shore Area School district for more than 60 years—first as a student and then as a guidance counselor, starting in 1975.

“Till 1995, and then I started subbing right away,” Yaudes said.

Yaudes put her name on the substitute teacher list in 1995 and hasn’t stopped since. She’s there almost every day.

‘I worked the whole month of February, March, and now April. I have every day. And I already have 17 days scheduled for May.”

Recently, the school gave Yaudes flowers and cards to celebrate her 90th birthday.

“I enjoy teaching, and I love the kids because we really have nice kids here, so there aren’t many problems. I just enjoy it.”

And this substitute has no plans to stop teaching.

“Because I don’t feel 90. And as long as they’ll have me, I’ll be here.”
