Astros lose another pitcher for the rest of the season

News of Ronel Blanco’s season-ending surgery comes just 10 days after Houston lost another starter for the season.

HOUSTON — The Astros pitching rotation took another hit on Wednesday, as the team announced one more starter is out for the year.

Right-handed pitcher Ronel Blanco will undergo right elbow surgery next week, which will end his season.

So far this season, Blanco is 3-4 with a 4.10 ERA with 48 strikeouts.

Blanco’s season ended just 10 days after Houston lost another starter. Hayden Wesneski was ruled out for the rest of the season because he needed Tommy John surgery.

So, looking at the current state of the Astros rotation, Spencer Arrighetti is still on the 15-day injured list with a return expected in July. Luis Garcia is still recovering from Tommy John surgery and doesn’t have an expected return date.  Cristian Javier also underwent Tommy John surgery and isn’t expected back until the middle of this season.  JP France is on the 60-day injured list with a torn right shoulder capsule. His return is expected in late 2025.

Hunter Brown and Framber Valdez are the only pitchers still in the starting rotation who began the season there.
