BOSTON — The Major League Baseball trade deadline has passed, but the Astros are still making moves.
The team announced on Sunday morning that they’ve added an arm to their bullpen. They picked up left-handed pitcher John Rooney from the Miami Marlins in exchange for cash considerations.
The Astros said Rooney would join them for Sunday’s series finale in Boston against the Red Sox and will wear #67.
Rooney, 28, has spent his career in the minors, where he has a career record of 27-19 with an ERA of 3.85. He has 12.27 strikeouts per nine innings pitched in Triple-A. Rooney has started 51 games in his career, but has primarily been a reliever.

The team also optioned right-handed pitcher Luis Contreras to Triple-A Sugar Land.
The lineup for the series finale is out and shortstop Jeremy Peña is back in it. Peña sat out Saturday’s game against Boston after experiencing a hamstring cramp in Friday’s game.
The series finale against Boston is the earliest baseball game the Astros have played in at least a quarter of a century. First pitch for the Astros-Red Sox game is 10:35 a.m. Houston time.
Welcome to the earliest #Astros game in 25 years or more.
Per Elias, today’s 11:35 a.m. ET start time is the earliest for Houston since at least 2000 (Elias is not able to go back any further than that season, per #Astros PR)@KHOU pic.twitter.com/599r4RoWiy— Jason Bristol (@JBristolKHOU) August 3, 2025
