Astros pull off deal less than 24 hours before trade deadline

Houston traded for Baltimore third baseman Ramón Urías and cash considerations. The move fills the hole left by Isaac Paredes’ injury.

HOUSTON — With less than 24 hours until the trade deadline, the Houston Astros have made a deal.

The team traded for third baseman Ramón Urías from the Baltimore Orioles. In exchange, Houston is sending minor league pitcher Twine Palmore to Baltimore.

The Astros have had more than their fair share of injuries this season and one player who may be out for an extended period of time is third baseman Isaac Paredes. Bringing Urías to town would help fill that void.

So far this season, Urías — a 2022 Gold Glove winner — is batting .248 with eight home runs and 34 RBIs. He’s played in 77 games, 68 of those at third base.

Paredes was batting .259 with a team-leading 19 home runs and 50 RBIs in 93 games for Houston before the injury. This is Paredes’ first year with Houston, coming over with Cam Smith and pitcher Hayden Wesneski in the deal that sent Kyle Tucker to Chicago.

Urías has been in the Majors since 2020. He’s played his entire career with the Orioles.

There’s still time for the team to make more moves before the trade deadline, which is 5 p.m. Houston time Thursday. The Astros may be in the market for starting pitching as they have eight starters on the injured list.
