HOUSTON — Alex Bregman remains a free agent, but now there’s a report that the Astros and the longtime Houston third-baseman are talking again and the door is open for him to return to Houston. And if he does come back, it could mean a position change for future Hall-of-Famer Jose Altuve.
National sportswriter Bob Nightengale posted about it on X Thursday. He said that the Astros are keeping the door open for Bregman’s return, though they aren’t optimistic and the slugging third-baseman has two serious offers.
He went on to say that if Bregman does come back to Houston, he could stay at third base, with Isaac Peredes moving to second base and Jose Altuve moving out to left field.
Could the Astros players imagine Altuve in left field? That’s the question we asked both Spencer Arrighetti and Jeremy Peña.
“No, I can’t imagine Jose not at second, but it would be crazy, you know,” Arrighetti said. “I mean, there’s been weird things that have happened, you know, I didn’t think could happen, but no, I can’t imagine Jose not at second.”
“I can’t see it, but you know if that’s something he’s open to and he wants to do, you know, I know he’s gonna try to show up every single day and doesn’t matter where they put him, he’s gonna try to do his best for the team,” Peña added.
Patrick Creighton from SportsRadio 610 said he talked to Nightengale, who told him that Altuve moving to left field was actually Altuve’s idea to get Bregman back.
Our scout, Jeremy Booth, said a better fit would be for Peredes to move to left field instead of Altuve.
With Spring Training less than a month away, we may find out soon where Bregman lands.
