AT&T blames processing error for outage, dispelling cyberattack rumor

Rumors behind AT&T’s nationwide mobile network outage were swirling all day Thursday with some pointing at a solar flare and others pointing at a more nefarious theory — a Russian cyber attack. The Texas-based communications company dispelled those rumors Thursday evening, blaming an “incorrect process” in their software for the outage.

That’s when the rumors started to swirl online about a Russian cyber attack. X, formerly known as Twitter, had its share of people saying they were told it’s a cyber attack by a their “friend who is an Army reservist.”

Other conspiracy theorists made wild claims that the outage may have been caused by a “satellite killer” that Russia launched into space to inspire more support for Ukraine. Yes. Really.

“Based on our initial review, we believe that today’s outage was caused by the application and execution of an incorrect process used as we were expanding our network, not a cyber attack,” the statement reads. “We are continuing our assessment of today’s outage to ensure we keep delivering the service that our customers deserve.”
