Both South by Southwest (SXSW) and Rodeo Austin begin Friday, March 8, along with the spring break holiday for many Texans across the state. AUS is anticipating a particularly higher volume of passengers flying in and out of the city on March 7, 8, 10, and 11.
The airport expects multiple days of 30,000 + flyers throughout the entire month, starting Thursday, March 7. To manage the surge, AUS has provided several tips for travelers preparing to take flight. AUS Passengers should plan to arrive approximately two and a half hours before nationwide flights and three hours ahead of international flights. Flyers with checked bags and rental cars should give themselves even more time upon arriving to the Austin airport.
In 2023, AUS had its busiest year on record with over 22 million total arriving and departing passengers served, surpassing the airport’s 2022 record-breaking total by more than one million passengers. AUS’s TSA Checkpoint 3 is currently closed until 2026 for an expansion project. However, Checkpoint 1 is open for screening, TSA PreCheck and CLEAR; Checkpoint 2 East is open for PreCheck; and Checkpoint 2 West is open for general and CLEAR, according to KVUE reporting.
KVUE reports that travelers flying with Allegiant Airlines and Frontier Airlines should park at the South Terminal, located at 10000 Logistics Lane, near U.S. Hwy 183 and Burleson Road.
