Austin City Council approves redevelopment for shopping plaza in North Austin

Anderson Square is currently home to a bingo hall and a pink gorilla statue.

AUSTIN, Texas — Changes could be coming to a North Austin shopping plaza.

The Austin City Council approved a zoning change for Anderson Square, near Anderson Lane and North Lamar Boulevard. The shopping plaza is currently home to a bingo hall and a pink gorilla statue that sits outside the hall.

The 16-acre site can now support up to 2,400 residential units and 2.4 million square footage of office, retail and hotel space. New plans for the site include four new 20-story high-rise buildings, walkable retail areas, a multi-story grocery store and a park.

The project also includes a $250,000 investment in the Red Line Parkway.

Property owners also plan to recruit local businesses for at least 50% of the commercial space.

The city of Austin has asked developers to preserve the pink gorilla statue.
