Austin embraces Spurs as games break records and build future fanbase

The veteran point guard enjoyed his time in Austin, TX.

SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Spurs‘ annual Rodeo Trip added the team’s Austin, TX games to its schedule.

The games aim to cultivate the Silver and Black fandom in the Texas capital with a pair of NBA games, activities, and much more.

For a few players, it was their first time on the extended road trip, including veteran Chris Paul, who appreciated the time spent in Austin and playing in the Moody Center.

“This was super dope, actually. I always look at stuff from a different perspective, as far as the league as a whole and experience,” he said.

The Spurs experience was at the top of the order in Austin.

Fans were treated to pop-up shops, free coffee, kids basketball clinics, a celebration of former Longhorns basketball player Kevin Durant, and games against the Pistons and the Suns.

And fans also helped break a Moody Center attendance record of 16,246 Silver and Black fans.

“This is really cool that the team does this, and the fans really come out and support this,” Paul added.

However, if Paul had his wish, the games at the Moody Center would have included a day off in between for him to explore the city.

“I wish we would have got a day between games instead of back-to-back, but I’m sure that has to do with scheduling,” he added.

Austin is becoming a second home for the Spurs, but San Antonio will always remain home base.

The team’s expansion into Austin helps cultivate more fans and support for San Antonio’s team, keeping the Spurs thriving as one of the premier NBA teams.

The Spurs will continue to play Austin games well into the future as San Antonio and Austin slowly merge into one metroplex.

The fans enjoyed it, the players had a blast playing in Austin, and Paul enjoyed being a part of this new tradition.

“I don’t know how many years it’s been going on, but I’m glad I got a chance to be a part of these,” he said.
