Since the Compassionate-Use Act passed the 84th Legislative Session in 2015, medical marijuana has slowly picked up momentum in Texas. Beginning this week, Central Texans will have easier access to the products.
On Tuesday afternoon, March 28, medical marijuana company goodblend opened its inaugural retail store in South Austin. The event, replete with ribbon cutting, swag, and music from DJ Chanel Eleven, marked the first brick-and-mortar medical marijuana dispensary inside city limits.
Located at 7105 E. Riverside Drive, the store will be open from Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
“This will be the first time where you’ll be able to come in to a convenience store with your prescription and actually order product live on the spot that’ll be in our inventory and then leave with it that day,” goodblend community relations manager Terrence Baugh told KVUE.
For now, Baugh said, customers will have to bring prescriptions to the shop. In the future, they are hoping to have doctors onsite for consultations and eventually, telemedicine visits. Baugh told KXAN that 7 million Texans are eligible for medical marijuana, but that fewer than 50,000 are enrolled.
Founded in 2015, goodblend is headquartered in Austin. The company says that its cannabis products are “cultivated and produced right here in the Lone Star State.” There are just three licensed medical marijuana dispensaries in the state: goodblend, Manchaca’s Texas Original, and Fluent, serving the Houston area.
The company previously toured the state on the “Ride for Your Rights Tour.” The CannaBus, as goodblend called it, made stops last October in San Angelo, Abilene, Fort Worth, Plano, Nacogdoches, Houston, San Antonio, and Killeen with free events meant to educate Texans on how they can qualify for medical marijuana.
