Austin police identify body found in Lady Bird Lake

Police said the woman’s body showed no sign of traumatic injuries.

AUSTIN, Texas — Austin police have identified the woman’s body pulled out of Lady Bird Lake near Downtown Austin on Thursday.

At around 8:20 a.m., the Austin Police Department (APD) said officers responded to a “welfare check” after a jogger reported seeing someone face down in the water. In addition to APD, the Austin-Travis County EMS (ATCEMS) and Austin Fire Department (AFD) crews also responded to the scene in the 90 block of Congress Avenue, near the bridge and the old Austin American-Statesman building.

ATCEMS said the response initially began as a water rescue, but APD said the woman in the water was pronounced dead at 9:08 a.m. APD said a death investigation is underway, but no foul play is suspected at this time. The woman’s body did not show any signs of traumatic injuries.

The woman was identified Friday by police as 49-year-old Jennifer Lynn Atkinson.

Officers are canvassing the area, looking for witnesses and surveillance footage. APD asks anyone who saw anything Wednesday night or Thursday morning to contact police.

No additional information is available at this time.
