A woman died in a hospital after she was found suffering from injuries, according to police.
AUSTIN, Texas — Police are investigating the 41st homicide of the year Monday morning in Downtown Austin.
In a media briefing, the Austin Police Department (APD) said at around 1:30 a.m., officers were patrolling in the Sixth Street district when they were informed of a woman who was injured in an alley near the intersection of East Sixth and Neches streets.
Police said they woman didn’t seem to have any apparent gunshot or stab wounds, so it’s unclear exactly how she was hurt, but she was taken to a nearby hospital, where she later died.
Officers are currently questioning a person of interest but couldn’t provide any information on the victim’s relationship to that person.
There is no threat to the public at this time, but KVUE spoke with people who are in the area daily about thoughts on the incident.
“I tend to avoid this area when it’s dark outside. I like to come around when it’s light,” said Lucas Paravano, who runs in the area. “I know that Sixth Street is here and some sketchy things can happen, so I just tend to avoid it. Sad to hear, but not surprising.”
“It’s kind of crazy, considering I live about four blocks over,” a woman named Madison said. “I hear about a lot of stuff going on in Austin, but to hear how close it was to me is really kind of a little scary.”
Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the APD Homicide Tip Line at 512-477-3588 or the APD TIPS Hotline at 512-472-8477.
