Austin police to give noon update on mass shooting on West 6th Street

Police are expected to show body camera footage from the officers who shot and killed the suspect.

AUSTIN, Texas — The Austin Police Department (APD) is expected to hold a press conference at noon Thursday where they will show the body camera footage from officers who stopped the mass shooter who killed three people and injured more than a dozen others at a downtown bar.

APD has a policy of releasing the body-worn camera footage of any officers who use their department-issued firearms against a suspect. KVUE will stream the coverage of the press conference live on KVUE+ at noon.

More than a dozen people were injured when the gunman opened fire outside Buford’s bar on West Sixth Street in Downtown Austin at around 2 a.m. Sunday, March 1. Two people – 19-year-old Ryder Harrington and 21-year-old Savitha Shan, a University of Texas student – were killed. A third victim, 30-year-old Jorge Pederson, was taken off life support on Monday.

A total of 14 patients were located at the scene and taken to nearby hospitals. At least four of the 14 patients had been released from local hospitals as of earlier this week, according to St. David’s HealthCare. Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said on Monday that at least two patients remained in critical condition.

FBI Acting Special Agent-in-Charge Alex Doran said the FBI is examining the suspect’s criminal history and background, which is also expected to be addressed in Thursday’s press conference. Doran said federal investigators are examining whether there is any ideological or international link to the attack, including reviewing items associated with the suspect such as clothing referencing Iran.

Both Doran and Davis added that the suspect had not previously been identified as a potential threat prior to the shooting, and David said the guns used in the shooting were obtained legally.

Anyone with any video or photographic evidence of the shooting is asked to submit it to police via the APD website.
