Avery Johnson supports Project Marvel for its potential to boost San Antonio.
SAN ANTONIO — Project Marvel, San Antonio’s potential massive plan to develop the downtown area with a new entertainment district and a new San Antonio Spurs arena, recently received a resounding thumbs-up from one of the team’s best players, Avery Johnson.
While speaking at the 2025 San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame, Johnson was asked about his thoughts on Project Marvel and how it can help the city move forward.
“It’s needed. It’s going to do so much. Think about all the jobs. Think about how San Antonio can continue to compete with all the concerts and all the different events,” he said. “I think it’s going to be perfect timing.”
Project Marvel has been a lightning rod among residents and Spurs fans. This November, residents will cast their votes on whether to proceed with two propositions (A & B). Proposition A will allocate $191.8 million for upgrades to facilities on the East Side, such as the Frost Bank Center and the Freeman Coliseum, and Proposition B will allocate $311 million in county funds for the new downtown Spurs arena.

According to a Spurs release, more than 2,000 students and their families attended, supported by over 250 volunteers from the various sports organizations. Residents from Ingram and surrounding school districts had the opportunity to participate in free sports clinics, meet team mascots and cheer squads, access mental health counseling, and engage in various activities designed to provide an uplifting experience and bring the community closer together during their time of need.
Attending the event were Avery Johnson and the coaching staff from the Spurs and the Houston Rockets.
