Baby born in ambulance during Texas ice storm

“While he was getting the car ready, I was going to get in the bath… but that didn’t work out,” the new mother said.

PLANO, Texas — As icy conditions gripped North Texas on Saturday morning, first responders in Plano were called to all kinds of emergencies — car crashes, broken water pipes, and one unexpected call they won’t forget.

“Car crashes, broken water pipes, not expecting a pregnancy emergency,” Plano Fire Rescue Spokeswoman Allison Smith said.

For Plano Fire-Rescue, that emergency turned out to be a baby delivery on one of the coldest mornings of the year.

“I do think weather plays a role in it for sure,” said Medical City Plano Labor and Delivery Nurse Tracey Wilberger.

Taylor and Stoney were eagerly awaiting the birth of their daughter, Amelia, who wasn’t due until next week. But as the ice storm settled in, their plans changed fast.

“We were expecting…but not in this condition,” Stoney said with a laugh.

Contractions started at about 4:30 a.m. they told WFAA.

“I went to peek outside. ‘Oh God! There’s ice outside,’” Stoney recalled saying.

“I was cussing a storm. I wasn’t saying anything to myself besides ‘I need to get this baby out of me!’” Taylor said.

Their car was frozen shut, and the contractions were coming quickly.

“While he was getting the car ready, I was going to get in the bath… but that didn’t work out,” she recalled.

That’s when Plano Fire-Rescue stepped in. Paramedics arrived and helped the couple reach Medical City Plano — but they didn’t quite make it inside.

At 7:30 a.m., inside an ambulance on an icy roadway, a team of firefighter-paramedics delivered baby Amelia. That team included Kyle Krawietz, Garrett Murray and Chris Zuniga.

Krawietz, a 10-year veteran, was the one who caught the baby.

“We were going to incorporate Kylie, instead of Kyle, into her name,” Taylor said, smiling.

“A little nod to Kyle, that’s good!” Smith added.

This is Taylor’s third girl, and easily the one with the most dramatic entry.

“Everyone’s been amazing, we’re lucky to be here,” Taylor said.

As the ice storm continues outside, the new parents held their newborn — a bundle of joy who arrived already bundled up.

“I see a very beautiful ice angel,” Stoney said.
