Baby dies after domestic-violence incident near Alamo Heights; two others hurt, police say

San Antonio police classified the shooting as a domestic violence incident, adding a 1-year-old and 2-year-old were among the victims.

SAN ANTONIO — A baby is dead and two others – the child’s 2-year-old sibling and 28-year-old mother – remain hospitalized with gunshot wounds after an apparent domestic dispute resulted in violence Monday night.

Police initially had said all three were shot by the suspect, 50-year-old Stephen Clare. However, on Friday – 11 days after the incident – the local medical examiner said the baby, Willow Clare, died from stab wounds to her abdomen.

Stephen Clare, 50, was arrested after the shooting, which saw law enforcement responding to the 500 block of Robinhood Place near Alamo Heights around 7 p.m. According to SAPD Chief William McManus, Clare was taken into custody in the area.

Officers found the woman shot on the sidewalk upon arrival, with injuries to her neck and lower torso. The local medical examiner confirmed Tuesday afternoon that an 11-month-old child died from the gunshot wounds.

Clare has since been charged with capital murder of a child under 10, and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He remains jailed on a $1.5 million bond, with an initial court appearance set for May 10.

If he were to be released before that date, Clare would have to be GPS-monitored, on house arrest and prohibited from contacting the victims, among other conditions set by a judge on Tuesday.

McManus said an 8-year-old and 11-year-old also inside the home were able to escape “by breaking windows at different parts of the house and exiting.” They were believed to be physically unharmed.

He also called the situation “infuriating” given the county’s efforts at curbing domestic violence.

“With all the resources and effort that we’ve put into assisting domestic violence victims and trying to prevent these things,” McManus said. “It’s just frustrating that these things continue to happen with the effort that we place on trying to prevent domestic violence and assisting the victims in the aftermath of a domestic violence incident.”

Court records indicate Clare and the woman divorced last year and, according to paperwork, they stopped living together in January of 2022. KENS 5 has also learned the suspect is a nurse practitioner based out of San Antonio, and that police had responded to the home for a disturbance call only once before. That was last October.
