Balcones Heights police officer injured in arrest attempt; suspect faces multiple charges, authorities say

A Balcones Heights police officer was injured during a violent arrest attempt of a 38-year-old crime suspect near Woodlawn Lake.

SAN ANTONIO — A Balcones Heights police officer was injured Tuesday afternoon when a man struck him with a vehicle during an attempted arrest near Woodlawn Lake.

Police said a 38-year-old man suspected of several crimes, including burglary and unauthorized use of credit cards, was under surveillance by the Balcones Heights Police Department.

According to the police department, detectives identified the suspect through several different videos and discovered his place of residence, thus setting up surveillance in that area. The suspect eventually left the residence sometime Tuesday afternoon, which is when police officers followed him to a secondary location and attempted to take him into custody.

Police said the man refused to be taken into custody and rammed his vehicle into a police officer, throwing the officer several feet into the air.

Authorities said police officers then began to pursue the man along with assistance from SAPD. The man was tracked to the 2400 block of N. Zarzamora and Woodlawn Avenue, where he was promptly taken into custody.

The officer who was struck did sustain some cuts and scrapes but is expected to be OK.

According to Balcones Heights PD, the man is expected to face multiple charges including aggravated assault against a peace officer.
