WACO, Texas — Baylor University has named a familiar face as its newest Chaplain and Dean of Spiritual Life.
Following the retirement of Dr. Burt Burleson in May, who had served in the role for 17 years, Baylor has announced that Dr. Charley Ramsey will now take over the position, according to Baylor Proud, a blog by the university.
Ramsey is a two-time graduate of Baylor and a Phi Beta Kappa scholar, the blog said, having served as director of Baptist Student Ministries at Baylor from 2017-2021 and serving the last four years as the university’s associate chaplain and director of campus ministries & church connections.
Baylor stated Ramsey’s overall ministry and academic career has spanned over 20 years and includes global mission leadership, interfaith scholarship and faculty appointments in the United States and South Asia.
Ramsey’s role will focus on guiding students, faculty and staff in their spiritual formation and faith journeys, Baylor Proud said. As Chaplain, Ramsey’s duties will reportedly include things like oversight of Chapel, campus ministries, missions and pastoral care across the Baylor community.
“Known for both his deep theological grounding and global perspective, Ramsey brings a heart for student formation and a vision for a spiritually vibrant campus,” Baylor Proud said of the new Chaplain.
“Baylor is a vibrant community committed to the spiritual formation of all students, faculty and staff,” Ramsey said. “My prayer is that we will walk in the light of Christ and be known for the way we love and serve others.”
Baylor Proud said, as Baylor’s chief spiritual officer, Ramsey now “leads the teams that shape the university’s Christian identity in action — from Chapel and service trips to pastoral care and ministry partnerships.”
