BCSO: 1-year-old ‘not doing well’ after being attacked by dogs in northeast-side home

First responders were called out the 9700 block of Spruce Ridge Drive, where a 36-year-old woman was detained.

BEXAR COUNTY, Texas — A 1-year-old boy has serious injuries after they were attacked by a dog near Converse, according to Bexar County’s sheriff who said the baby was “not doing well at all” as he was taken to a local hospital.

First responders were called out just before 10 a.m. Monday to the 9700 block of Spruce Ridge Drive, in a neighborhood on the northeast side.

Sheriff Javier Salazar said from the scene the baby was being cared for by a 13-year-old when the attack unfolded. Three dogs were involved, including a “pit bull mix” who lived in the home, that Salazar said “became aggressive for whatever reason.”

“One of the dogs pulled the baby from the bed and at least one of the other dogs joined in, and they mauled the baby pretty seriously,” Salazar said.

When the 13-year-old tried to intervene, she too was bitten, the sheriff said.

The baby was taken directly to Brooke Army Medical Center from the home and was expected to be airlifted to University Hospital.

“Unfortunately, we were made aware, while we were here on scene, that this is not the first time something like this has happened. My understanding is that… there has been a dog attack episode at this residence here before. My understanding is that the owner was cited at that time, and the dogs have actually been deemed dangerous animals,” Salazar said.

Officials at first said a 36-year-old woman detained at the scene for questioning was the children’s mother; the sheriff’s office later clarified she was babysitting the baby and that there’s no relation.
