BCSO: 27-year-old jail inmate dies after attempting suicide

Adrianna Lastra is the seventh person jailed in Bexar County to have died this year so far.

SAN ANTONIO — Three days after jail personnel interrupted and prevented an inmate’s suicide attempt, she died at a local hospital when her family decided to remove her from life support, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office says.

Adrianna Lastra passed away late last Thursday at University Hospital, where she was taken the previous Monday “for further treatment” after a sheriff’s deputy conducting routine checks discovered her trying to take her own life.

“The deputy immediately entered the cell, utilized a cutting tool specifically designed for suicide attempts and began lifesaving measures,” BCSO said in a news release, adding medical staff arrived shortly after.

Authorities said Lastra’s family made their decision “after consultation with medical personnel.” She had been at the detention facility in west San Antonio since April 1.

Per state protocols, the Castle Hills Police Department is investigating the incident while BCSO conducts its own internal “administrative review.”

Lastra’s death marks the third such incident involving a Bexar County jail inmate in June, and the seventh overall this year. She’s also the youngest of those individuals who have died; the oldest was 50 years old.
