Investigators are looking into a child’s death after she was found unconscious inside a restroom at San Antonio school. The incident happened Friday, June 6 at Excelled Montessori School in Boerne, 30 miles northwest of San Antonio on Interstate 10. According to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, the 6-year-old girl went to use the restroom and after a few minutes a school staff member went to check on her when they discovered her unconscious.
The school quickly called 911, and first responders worked to perform live-saving measures. She was transported to University Hospital where Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said she later died. It’s unclear what led to her death, but officials say it appears she had underlying health conditions that may have contributed. Investigators are not ruling out foul play, but they say they do not suspect it in this case. According to Sheriff Salazar, the school has notified parents about the incident, and deputies will remain on campus for the next several hours.
“We understand that parents are going to be concerned, especially in light of previous events at this school. But I just want to make it clear that all of the kids are safe and accounted for. The affected child’s parents have already been notified. So if you have not received notification, your child is okay. Take your time coming to the school to pick them up,” he said.
Just last December, a deadly incident claimed the lives of a teacher and toddler after a driver suffered a medical episode following a Christmas program at the school. A month after their death, the families of 22-year-old Alexia Rosales and 1-year-old Mkaya Amrani filed a million-dollar lawsuit against the driver, who documents identify as Valerie L. Haas, and the school, Excelled Montessori Preschool LLC.
The lawsuit claims Haas was negligent for driving with a medical condition. The lawsuit also alleges that Excelled Montessori Preschool was negligent in ensuring adequate safety measures for the children. Four other students were also hurt in the crash. The December deaths are still under investigation.
