BCSO deputies recovering following shooting Sunday in North Bexar County

Investigators say there had been at least 22 calls for service tied to the same residence since early 2024, and the suspect had two active felony warrants.

BEXAR COUNTY, Texas — Newly released details are shedding more light on the deputy-involved shooting that left two Bexar County deputies wounded and a suspect dead following a domestic disturbance call in north Bexar County.

According to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, the shooting happened just after 8:30 a.m. Sunday in the 700 block of Tecumseh Drive near East Borgfeld Road. Sheriff Javier Salazar provided an update on the deputies’ conditions and new details about how the encounter unfolded.

The injured deputies were identified as Deputy Nathan Sigala and Deputy Nicholas Zinni. Sigala, a patrol deputy with the agency since 2012, was shot through the hand and is undergoing surgery for what Salazar described as significant injuries. He is expected to be released from University Hospital later Monday. Zinni, who has been with the sheriff’s office since 2023, was shot in the hip and has already been released from the hospital.

Salazar says investigators now believe a single bullet struck both deputies — passing through Sigala’s hand before entering Zinni’s hip and exiting his body.

The suspect has been identified as 38-year-old Jose Arlen Fernandez-Solano, a Costa Rican national with an extensive criminal history. Salazar says Fernandez-Solano had been deported at least once and had multiple prior arrests for domestic violence-related offenses, including assault causing bodily injury to a family member and injury to a child. Investigators say there had been at least 22 calls for service tied to the same residence since early 2024, and the suspect had two active felony warrants connected to a domestic violence case from October.

According to the sheriff, the woman who lived at the home had reported ongoing threats from the suspect toward her and her children. On Sunday morning, she was able to get her two children — ages 8 and 10 — out of the house and call 911 from up the street after the suspect entered the home without permission. Authorities say the suspect had threatened to harm the family and responding deputies.

When deputies arrived and attempted to make contact, Salazar says a brief struggle occurred after deputies could not see the suspect’s hands. Investigators believe Fernandez-Solano then produced a stolen .40-caliber handgun and fired one round. Deputies returned fire, striking the suspect at least three times. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Salazar emphasized that the entire gunfight lasted only a matter of seconds — a situation he described as typical of real-life law enforcement encounters. A third deputy who arrived on scene rendered aid to both wounded deputies and calmly radioed for help.

The sheriff’s office says body camera video from the incident will be released publicly in the coming days. Both deputies have been placed on administrative leave, per department policy, and are expected to return to limited duty once cleared medically and psychologically.

“There’s nothing I see that could have been done differently,” Salazar said. “I’m very proud of how these deputies handled this situation, and thankful they’re both alive.”

The investigation remains ongoing.
