BCSO issues warning after local loses thousands in text scam

The post said the victim contacted BCSO on January 29, 2025, to report that he had sent a $2,500 check via Western Union to an individual named Braylin Alberto Tejeda in the Dominican Republic. The victim told deputies that he sent the check out of fear after receiving a text message from an unfamiliar number, which included his social security number, and demanded that he send $5,000 while threatening his family’s safety.

The victim then received a phone call from an unfamiliar number stating that he still owed $1,500, and if he did not pay, the scammers would come to his home, BCSO said. He then received a video via text message showing three masked individuals with guns and later discovered unauthorized transactions in his accounts — $1,500 was deposited into a PayPal account belonging to someone named Nicole Batista, and another $500 was sent to an unknown Cash App account, according to the post.

Investigators warn that if you receive a similar call, you should hang up and contact law enforcement. If you have been a victim of a recent or similar scam, BCSO advises you to call 210-335-6000 or email BCSOTIPS@bexar.org.
