Deputies say a property owner called them when their game camera caught the 2-year-old wandering the woods barefoot and alone at 3 a.m.
SAN ANTONIO — The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a mother and grandmother after officials say a 2-year-old was found wandering the woods barefoot and alone around 3 a.m.
Early on Friday morning, BCSO received a disturbing call from the south side reporting a child wandering the woods by themselves. A property owner told deputies the girl was seen on their game cameras wearing only a dress and no shoes.
“With temperatures in the 40s, this little girl faced potential life-threatening danger at that hour,” BCSO said.
Around 7:20 a.m., a woman later identified as Haley Peoples reported her 2-year-old daughter missing after she had “gotten out of the home” earlier that morning.
When deputies arrived, they said they found unsafe living conditions that included trash, soiled clothing, rotting food, rat droppings and a heavy odor of urine.
The girl was also found, but her clothes were found soiled and EMS was requested to give her a medical evaluation.
Peoples was detained and the grandmother also arrested after she allegedly interfered with CPS’s child-safety investigation when she tried to take the three other siblings out of school after learning of the incident, authorities said.
BCSO says all four children, all under the age of 8, were taken to a local hospital for evaluation.
Peoples faces a charge of abandoning/endangering a child – imminent danger of bodily injury, while the grandmother faces a charge of interference with investigation of abuse/neglect.
