BCSO: Toddler accidentally shot in the head after gun goes off inside northeast-side Bexar County home

Sheriff Javier Salazar said it appears that another child inside the home attempted to hide the weapon from law enforcement.

SAN ANTONIO — The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office said a toddler accidentally shot himself with a gun that he found inside a northeast-side residence.

BCSO said deputies were called to the scene of a reported shooting at the home in the 6400 block of Candleview Court on Sunday afternoon. Upon arrival, Sheriff Javier Salazar said a 2-year-old boy was found with a gunshot wound to the head.

Salazar said it appears the toddler likely found the weapon inside the parent’s room and it went off, striking him in the head. The boy’s injuries are non-life threatening, according to BCSO, and it does not appear that the bullet penetrated his skull.

The sheriff also said there was flooding inside the house due to the bullet hitting a water pipe in the ceiling.

The 2-year-old was transported to University Hospital. BCSO said it is too early in the investigation to tell if anyone will be facing charges but it appears that one child inside the house attempted to hide the weapon from law enforcement.

BCSO said there were six other children inside the home at the time of the shooting. No one else was hurt.

This is an ongoing investigation.
