BCSO: Woman dies in custody at Bexar County Jail

She had been booked into custody on June 22 on controlled substance charges and was experiencing withdrawal symptoms, according to BCSO.

SAN ANTONIO — The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office say a woman has died while in custody at the jail.

This happened Wednesday night just before 6:30 p.m.

BCSO says the deputies were alerted by inmates about a 36-year-old woman having a medical episode. Life-saving measure were given, but she was pronounced dead about 20 minutes later. Officials say she had last been checked about 10 minutes prior to the medical episode.

The woman, whose name has not been released, was booked June 22 on controlled substance charges and had been experiencing withdrawal symptoms during the intake process, according to BCSO.

Due to her condition, she was actively receiving detox treatment, BCSO says. Preliminarily, it appears the inmate suffered a medical episode compounded by withdrawal symptoms; however, the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office will ultimately determine the exact cause and manner of death.

In accordance with the Sandra Bland Act, the Castle Hills Police Department is handling the death investigation, while the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office Internal Affairs Unit is conducting a concurrent administrative review. Jail officials have notified the Texas Commission on Jail Standards of the incident.
