BEAUMONT, Texas — A Beaumont man who lost his vision a decade ago is using his time and determination to make a difference in Southeast Texas.
Jarvis Grant, 32, has been legally blind for 10 years due to complications from sickle cell disease. But three times a week, he finds his way by bus, Uber, or a ride from his brother, to the Southeast Texas Food Bank, where he volunteers with a smile on his face and a heart set on helping others.
“Even though I know it’s hard, because I’m going through it, I don’t let my disability stop me from volunteering,” Grant said.
Grant’s favorite task is sorting through boxes, something he completes with care, relying on more than just his sight. Despite his challenges, he says volunteering brings him joy and a sense of purpose.
“I feel like it’s my duty because I’ve been doing it for a while,” he said. “I really enjoy doing it.”
Grant, who also enjoys swimming, basketball, and shopping, says staying active helps him cope with his condition.
“I stay busy to keep my mind off of it and I just embrace it,” he said.
Mary Simon and Lupe Muniz, who work with volunteers at the Southeast Texas Food Bank, say Grant’s presence makes a big impact.
“His light just shines,” Simon said. “So when other volunteers see what he’s doing, what he’s capable of doing, that inspires them.”
Muniz echoed the sentiment. “He’s doing really good, just by giving up his time,” she said. “That means a lot to people.”
Grant hopes his story encourages others who may also be facing difficulties.
“I’m hoping I’m able to encourage others out there to keep pushing on, keep working, even if you have a disability,” he said.
He plans to continue volunteering for as long as he can. Those who wish to support his efforts can help by purchasing a Para Transit bus pass in his name from the Beaumont ZIP office. The monthly unlimited ride pass costs $80. Once purchased, the office will ensure it’s delivered to Grant via a bus driver.
