Behind the scenes with Seguin PD’s only cold case detective

SEGUIN, Texas — Tucked inside an office at Seguin Police are unsolved cases hoping to see the light of justice.  The department currently has 14 unsolved cold cases.

Detective Jaime Diaz is the only person dedicated to these cases, which he took over nearly a year ago.

“I am giving the attention they need,” he said.

He said the oldest dates back to 1982 to the most recent in 2022. Diaz spends his time going back through all of them to review the evidence.

“Looking at every small detail,” he said. “Not only that re-interviewing some of the witnesses. Re-interviewing some of the family members that are from the victim’s family.”

Diaz highlighted two cases with KENS 5. On March 22, 2010 investigators said Olga Paz was found dead at a home on Bauer Street. Police said Paz was getting ready for work when she was brutally stabbed by an intruder. Diaz believes the mother didn’t know her attacker.

“They knew everything about them, all the neighbors, except no one saw something that morning,” he said.

The detective said at one point, Paz’s husband was arrested. But, said the charges were later dropped. He said new evidence recently came to light that he’s currently reviewing.

The second cold case happened on November 6, 2016 and involves a mother and her son. At the time, officers responded to a shooting on Baxter street in Seguin. Officers found Belinda and Jeremy Sauceda dead with multiple gunshot wounds.

“We believe they are truly innocent victims,” Diaz said. “They were not involved in any criminal activity.”

As the years go by, he said the leads do stop. He believes someone coming forward could break the cases.

“San Antonio being so close to Sequin, a lot of people that live here have friends there and family members there, he said. “I know someone knows about these cases.”

Diaz said there are rewards offered in both of these cases. If you know anything, call the Guadalupe County Crime Stoppers at 1-877-403-TIPS.
