
Longtime KENS 5 journalist Ron Smith, renowned for his dedication passed away.
SAN ANTONIO — The KENS 5 family is mourning the loss of one of its longtime newsroom pillars, Ron Smith, known fondly as “Smitty.” Smith passed away on Wednesday.
Smith spent 33 years at KENS 5, building a career defined by dedication, heart and an unwavering commitment to telling the stories that shaped San Antonio and Texas.
He worked alongside legendary KENS 5 reporter Gary DeLaune, delivering live coverage during the 1979 Battle of Flowers Fiesta sniper attack, bringing crucial updates to viewers as the tragedy unfolded. In 1993, he spent weeks on the ground outside Waco, reporting on the tense Branch Davidian standoff.
Over the decades, Smith covered some of the state’s biggest and most challenging stories, becoming a steady, trusted presence for viewers and colleagues alike. He set a high standard in the KENS 5 newsroom, one built on accuracy, compassion and genuine care for the community he served.
Smith retired in 2010, leaving behind a legacy that continues to shape the station today.
