Grant Moody, who represents Bexar County Precinct 3 on the Commissioners Court and is a lieutenant colonel with the Marine Reserves, has been called to active duty “due to escalating tensions with Iran in the Middle East,” his chief of staff confirmed to KENS 5.
He’s expected to support operations at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida, until early August. His office says he will participate in Commissioners Court meetings remotely during a pivotal time that could see Bexar County officially call for a venue tax election to help fund a downtown Spurs arena ahead of an August deadline.
“I am honored to serve my country as a member of the Marine Reserves and I’m committed to fulfilling my duties to both my country and my community,” the commissioner said in a press release.
Moody has remained on the reserves force after serving as a Marine pilot for a decade, according to his county biography. He’s served on the Commissioners Court since 2002.
Israeli began attacking Iran’s capital last week, targeting the country’s nuclear program and raising the potential for an all-out war between the two bitter Middle East adversaries. Iran responded by firing some 400 missiles and hundreds of drones, killing at least 24 people in Israel and wounding hundreds.
On Wednesday, Israel lifted some restrictions on daily life, suggesting the missile threat from Iran was easing. But the development came as Iran’s supreme leader rejected U.S. calls for surrender, warning that any military involvement by the Americans would cause “irreparable damage to them.”
U.S. President Donald Trump demanded in a social media post on Tuesday that Iran surrender without conditions, having hinted at greater American involvement after initially distancing himself from Israel’s surprise attack on Friday.
