Bexar Co. deadly crash believed to be caused by high-speeding driver sparks community outrage

A man is accused of killing a 71-year-old woman during a crash last Wednesday off Alamo Ranch Parkway. Investigators say he was going 108 mph in a 45 mph zone.

BEXAR COUNTY, Texas — A community is calling for change after a 71-year-old woman was killed during a crash investigators say was caused by reckless driving and excessive speeding.

The 20-year-old suspect is facing a manslaughter charge. He is accused of going 108 mph in a 45 mph zone.

It happened in west Bexar County off Alamo Ranch Parkway last Wednesday. The suspect was identified as Richard Aron Gonzales.

Investigators said Gonzales struck the side of an SUV, driven by Patricia Browning. Both were rushed to the hospital, where Browning passed away. Gonzales was eventually taken into custody from his hospital bed. He has since bonded out.

Bryan Morales works at a car wash off Alamo Ranch Parkway. He said he witnessed the crash.

“We saw a flash; you know flash come down the street and you see the mustang pretty much fly into their area,” Morales said. “There’s a bunch of smoke in the area.”

He said several people ran to help. He said the scene was heartbreaking. Once Browning was identified, he realized she had come to the car wash before.

“She was a real nice lady, and it was just, it’s tragic to see something like that,” Morales said.

According to the warrant, investigators gathered surveillance videos, witness statements and data from Gonzales’s Ford Mustang.

Eric Abraham did not witness the crash. However, he said the entire neighborhood heard about what happened. He said he goes on afternoon walks every day, where he constantly witnesses speeding.

“I originally moved here in 2012 and the population has exploded but the infrastructure for the driving hasn’t and you have a lot of people who are impatient,” Abraham said.

He said he hopes county leaders investigate whether there is a need for more traffic lights or increased law enforcement presence.

“It’d be nice to see how we could adjust or work on slowing down the traffic,” Abraham said.

The Bexar County Public Works Department released this statement regarding updating the infrastructure in the area to meet the growing population:

The Alamo Ranch area has been the fastest growing part of Bexar County for the last several years. Both Bexar County and the Alamo Regional Mobility Authority (RMA) are in the beginning stages of major infrastructure projects that will enhance mobility and safety along the corridor.

The County’s Public Works department is designing an eastbound overpass along Alamo Ranch Parkway at Westwood Loop similar to the westbound overpass that the County completed a few years ago. Design recently started and we are hoping to start construction in 2027.

The RMA recently selected a design consultant to prepare a preliminary design for the greater Alamo Ranch Parkway corridor from Loop 1604 to its current dead end near Calaveras Way. Potential improvements will consist of overpasses at the existing intersections along the corridor. We are hoping to begin the design this Summer with community meetings later in 2025. Once the preliminary design is completed, the RMA Board will determine next steps and construction could potentially start in late 2027 or early 2028 for this project.

KENS 5 also reached out to BCSO to see if they are planning to increase patrols in the area. We are waiting to hear back.
