Clay-Flores added even though she was smiling for the public, at the forefront of her mind was not only the fact she had a “large tumor”, but that it was bleeding.
BEXAR COUNTY, Texas — During Commissioners Court on Tuesday, Precinct 1 Bexar County Commissioner Rebeca Clay-Flores revealed she has been battling with colon cancer.
Clay-Flores said during her long campaign trail, she realized something was off with her body and wanted to read a statement so her emotions wouldn’t get the best of her as she explained the struggles she faced while not yet knowing what was wrong.
She said during that time she faced “false accusations and lies by [her] many opponents and political enemies.”
Then she explained when she realized what was truly wrong.
“In between knocking on doors, media interviews and life’s other responsibilities, I was going through treatment, ” she said. “So, through months of doctors appointments and labs drawn and treatments, the weekend when early voting was starting for the November elections, I was diagnosed with colon cancer.”
Clay-Flores added that even though she was smiling for the public, at the forefront of her mind was not only the fact she had a “large tumor” in her colon, but that it was also bleeding.
The only answer she knew for sure, she said, was with her relationship with Christ and went on to thank all the medical professionals and people that helped her as she went through grueling surgeries during that time.
She said when she asked her doctor if she has any risk factors, he told her the only risk was her race.
“If you are in your forties and black, you have a higher risk. Please call right now to make an appointment with your doctor to schedule your colonoscopy,” Clay-Flores said. “In addition to my advocacy for mental health funding and preventative health access, I will be a fierce proponent for colon cancer screenings.”
