SAN ANTONIO — The Bexar County District Attorney’s Office says it’s made progress on a massive backlog of family violence misdemeanor cases.
The DA’s office says it has cut down the backlog by 37%.
Last October, they had a peak of 2,896 cases. Now, they have reduced the case log down to 1,832.
The backlog was at its peak during a staffing shortage, which is one of the issues the DA’s office says it has fixed.
The family violence division is the largest of the office under the DA’s command, with double the number of attorneys assigned to it. The DA says the investment in manpower and resources has helped streamline case management.
The family violence division handles cases involving domestic violence, sexual assault, child physical and sexual abuse, and human trafficking.
How cases are prioritized, and the timeline for when the district attorney’s office plans to have the backlog to zero, is not known at this time.
KENS 5 reached out to the DA’s office for comment but did not immediately hear back.
