SAN ANTONIO — A 36-year-old Bexar County sheriff’s deputy was jailed and faces multiple charges after allegedly assaulting a civilian employee he was in a relationship with.
Jonatan Amaya, who has been with the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) since 2018, faces charges of assault on a family member and interfering with emergency request for assistance after authorities say he arrived to the victim’s home “uninvited” on Sunday, at which point they started “arguing about their relationship.”
BCSO said the altercation eventually turned physical when he was asked to leave the residence.
“The victim stated that after warning Amaya that the police would be called if he refused to leave, Amaya grabbed the victim’s phone and threw it across the room,” BCSO said in a release. “At a certain point, Amaya grabbed the victim by the arms, pushed her against the wall and held her down on the floor with his hand over her neck.”
Investigators spoke with the victim and obtained a warrant for Amaya, who officials say was arrested Monday while on duty. He has been a corporal in the agency since February 2023.
“Our Public Integrity Unit did an outstanding job of acting swiftly in making this arrest and ensuring the safety of the victim,” Sheriff Javier Salazar said in the release. “We will continue to act in the best interest of justice, regardless of who the perpetrator is.”
Amaya is the ninth BCSO deputy arrested on criminal charges this year. He was released on bond Tuesday, online records show, and is due back in court on Dec. 17.
