
Bexar County deputy Benjamin Ramos III faces charges for allegedly assaulting a family member following an argument about attending an event with his ex-girlfriend.
SAN ANTONIO — A Bexar County Sheriff’s deputy has been accused of assaulting a family member during a heated dispute, the department said in a press release.
40-year-old Benjamin Ramos III was charged with assault causing bodily injury – family member.
Authorities say on Saturday, a victim informed San Antonio police that after a verbal argument about Ramos attending an event with his ex-girlfriend, a confrontation turned physical.
According to the press release, the victim told officers Ramos struck her on her neck with a closed fist, knocking her necklace to the ground. He then allegedly hit her on the temple with another closed-first punch, causing swelling and a broken blood vessel in her eye. The victim said she was struck again in the face, which caused more bruising and swelling. The victim added that Ramos punched her several times on her arms as she tried to defend herself.
Authorities say Ramos left the location of the alleged assault but called SAPD to file a report at a different location. After Ramos gave a statement to police he was placed into custody. He was arrested Sunday afternoon.
According to BCSO, Ramos has been employed at the sheriff’s office since July 2005 and is currently assigned to the Law Enforcement Bureau Judicial Services Division as a Bailiff.
A separate administrative investigation is underway, pending the outcome of the criminal case by SAPD.
Sheriff Salazr released the following statement regarding the incident:
“Those who cannot follow the law have no business enforcing the law. While the SAPD works the criminal case, we will ensure accountability administratively.”
